As we mentioned yesterday, the State of the Union, intended to be a hopeful look into the future, seems to have become more of a venue to deliver empty promises. At least when it comes to addressing the federal government’s spending problem and, ultimately, our national debt.

For generations, from Republican and Democratic presidents, we’ve heard well-intentioned plans to control the nation’s fiscal imbalances. And we still find ourselves over $15 trillion in debt. Only by reining in overspending can we begin to address the debt burden that is putting an economic recovery in jeopardy.  It’s past time for bold spending reforms.

Last week, we went out to Times Square to see what people in the financial capital of the world had to say about the supercommittee. Suffice it to say they weren’t very impressed.

Even before the supercommittee announced its failure to produce a deal, the people we talked to were skeptical of Congress’ inability to work together to get our nation’s finances under control. For too long we’ve been listening to what Washington has to say about our economic problems – how we got here and how we get out. For decades, Washington has been on a spending spree driving us deeper and deeper in debt. In fact, just this morning, Agence France Presse reported that the U.S.’s gross debt has reached 100% of GDP for the first time since after World War II. Most recently this trend resulted in a mind-spinning debt ceiling debate where it seemed like lawmakers had totally lost their minds.
