Unemployment drops in January

Posted by BA Team On February - 3 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 243,000 jobs have been added to the economy in the month of January, dropping the current unemployment rate to 8.3% from 8.5%. This marks the fifth straight month of job growth. The release detailed accelerated job growth across widespread industries and salary ranges, showing a marked improvement from past months.

Though the unemployment drop is a sign of improvement, the economy still has a lot of work to do. Numbers prior to the beginning of the recession in 2007, show a deficit of 5.6 million fewer jobs today. With so much more to go, we can wonder why our leaders are only focusing on the .2% decrease in jobs over one month. The Associated Press reports that at this moment 12.8 million Americans are out of work, with another 11 million either working part time and would like to work full time, or have given up looking for work all together. When you take into account these numbers we reach a real unemployment rate of around 15%.

While our elected leaders focus on a small decrease in the reportable unemployment rate, Americans are feeling the effects of a $15 trillion national debt and a slowly rebounding jobs market. With economists expecting a slower rate of growth this year, we can only hope that our representatives take action soon.

Barack Obama Using Scripture

Posted by Adam On February - 3 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

In America today there is a new fad called Designer Christianity. Cherry-picked Christian ideology has zero to do with God’s Word and everything to do with the moral relativism that now pervades modern philosophy. It is a pick-and-choose brand of religion where a person selects exactly what they want to believe, misinterprets and takes Scripture out of context, and then labels those who object to that sacrilege as mean-spirited, un-Jesus-like, and anti-Christian.

It’s a mentality that says a personal interpretation of Scripture trumps the canon of God’s Word and anything can be justified because God is much bigger than small-minded, fundamentalist-style thinking.  Rather than align with truth, designer Christians mistakenly believe that God is eager to conform to public opinion and expectations.

Using Scripture to justify one’s own desires or beliefs is the highest form of opportunism. The truth is that when it comes to misusing Christianity, Barack “Audacity” Obama issues edicts against religious organizations one day and then quotes Scripture to justify forcing Christians to support abortion the next.

This year at the National Prayer Breakfast, President Barack Obama spoke on Jesus’ behalf and claimed “support from on high to defend two of his most controversial legislative achievements” – one being healthcare reform, an aspect of which includes funding abortion on demand.

Good Samaritan Barack Obama must believe Christian charity includes supplying free abortions and contraceptives to everyone in America, because just as he said, God knows “far too many neighbors in our country have been hurt and treated unfairly over the last few years.” Over breakfast, President Obama shared the importance of obeying God’s commandment to “love thy neighbor as thyself.” What he didn’t mention was that he makes an exception to that rule for women seeking an abortion, because “Thou shalt not kill” doesn’t apply when the victim is in utero.

The President even provided the National Prayer Breakfast attendees with mental imagery of himself as Jacob wrestling with God and prevailing when he reportedly said that he often “falls to his knees in prayer,” and where he “emphasized the role of his religious values in determining where to lead the country.” One wonders whether it was during one of those prayer sessions the President managed to convince the Lord to change His mind and give dispensation to government to force Catholic institutions, against their beliefs, to provide coverage for contraceptives, sterilization, and ultimately abortion.

We’ll never know, but nonetheless, while speaking to the prayer breakfast crowd the President, in the name of God, also maintained that he is “call[ing] for the wealthiest to give up their tax breaks…out of economic necessity, but also in line with biblical teachings.”  Could it be that Barack Obama is suggesting mixing church and state together? After all, Jesus did say to “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and unto God what is God’s.” Is Barack Obama now suggesting that paying taxes to the government fulfills our responsibility to both Caesar and God?

Waxing homiletic, Obama invited America into the solitude of his prayer closet when he said, “And I think to myself, if I’m willing to give something up as somebody who’s been extraordinarily blessed, and give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy, I actually think that’s going to make economic sense.”

Then, pulling a pick-and-choose maneuver, the President followed that up by saying, “But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’ teaching that ‘for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.’”

The Obama doctrine is such that, to the President – to whom we all know ‘much has been given’ – caring for the poor in the name of Jesus Christ includes monetary extortion. Furthermore, Barack’s dogma obviously adheres to the heretical belief that neither he nor his congregants will be required to explain exactly how caring for the least among us includes supporting abortion.

In “defense” of the innocent, the President defends either himself, or a policy that further enhances his largely government-driven religious convictions. In a stunning example of his typical cluelessness, Obama “defended foreign aid from assault, noting that it not just enhances the nation’s security,” – and here’s where it gets really good – “but fulfills the biblical requirement to look out for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

When referencing foreign aid, Uganda, and human trafficking, the President said, “It’s also about the biblical call to care for the least of these – for the poor; for those at the margins of our society. To answer the responsibility we’re given in Proverbs to ‘Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.’”  Interestingly enough, another translation of that Proverb reads: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.”

But never mind all that “justice for those being crushed” talk, because once again at yet another National Prayer Breakfast, Barack Obama attempted to maintain his religious credibility while employing a pick-and-choose form of Christianity.  He shared with the faithful that he gains spiritual insight and values through a unique interpretation of the Bible and “private moments of prayer.” In other words, the President seeks divine approval to administer policy for the common good and to do ‘God’s work’ in the form of providing unlimited funding and unfettered access to abort those Americans “who cannot speak for themselves.”

In a profanity-laced tirade, a Memphis DJ last week used an on-air interview to berate a local Republican congressional candidate — calling her a “token negro” who is doing the bidding of “white folk.”

DJ Thaddeus Matthews called Charlotte Bergmann, who is black, “stupid.” He referred to her as a “curly-haired nigga.” When she walked out of the interview, he refused to shake her hand, saying he didn’t want to get her “whiteness” on him.

The outrage? The fury? In Memphis, you can hear the crickets.

Bergmann told FoxNews.com that, while the web video of the interview has gotten a lot of attention on blogs, local media are largely ignoring it. She said she hasn’t gotten any calls from politicians about it. “No organization has spoken out,” Bergmann said.

“The anger has been expressed throughout the nation, but not in my local … area,” she said.

As for her treatment on air, which she described as “racist” and abusive, she said it stems from the notion that black politicians should uniformly be Democrats.

Bergmann is running in Tennessee’s 9th District, which is mostly black. The seat is currently held by Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen, whose office so far has not returned a request for comment on the radio interview.

Matthews has stood by the bulk of his comments. He told MyFoxMemphis.com on Thursday that he’s apologized on air for the “whiteness” comment, but he defended the rest.

“I do not regret the content of what I said. In the anger of having another politician in my studio that knows absolutely nothing about nothing and gives me stupid answers, I don’t regret that,” he said. “Now the context of the whiteness rubbing off … that part I do regret, that particular portion of the show. But the rest of everything I said, I meant exactly what I said.”

It’s unclear how the radio station management, at WPLX-AM 1180, is handling the incident, but the owner of the broadcasting company apparently has issued an apology. Bergmann said the owner, William Pollack, called her Wednesday to apologize. She also provided a written apology under Pollack’s name, which expressed regret for the “ill treatment” on air.

“I was unaware of the horrific treatment of you until today. I have personally met with Matthews and will assure you this situation is receiving our complete attention,” the statement said, adding that he “personally supported” Bergmann in 2010 and will do so again.

Bergmann eventually walked out of the interview, which was conducted last Tuesday.

But for the first 12 minutes, Matthews repeatedly challenged her loyalty to black people.

Matthews started by asking about her affiliation with the Tea Party

He accused her of evading the question, later asking, “Are you a token of white folk? And white folk using you to come against black folk?”

After she started to respond, Matthews interrupted, saying: “Damn, Ms. Bergmann, shut up for a moment. OK, shut up for a moment, because you shucking and jiving.”

The confrontational interview continued as he challenged her on plans to help the black community. “All I see in you is another token negro,” he said, likening her to former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain.

After several minutes, the DJ threatened to cut off her microphone and throw her out of the studio. “I’m so sick of your sh-, yourself, and I’m about to put your ass up outta here,” he said. “You are a token negro that white folk have control over.”

Eventually, Bergmann said “we have a failure to communicate” and left the studio.

Matthews continued to berate the congressional candidate.

“Get up and get your ass up outta here. Get your stupid, ignorant ass up outta my studio,” he said.

As she left, Bergmann held out her hand to the DJ.

“I don’t need to shake your hand,” he told her. “I’m scared because some of that whiteness might rub off on me.”

Bergmann told FoxNews.com that she’s trying to get the video of the confrontation shown at the upcoming Conservative Political Action Conference — an annual meet-up in Washington of prominent conservatives.

She said her campaign has reached out to two Republican lawmakers about that possibility.

She also said donations to her campaign have spiked since the incident.

Matthews has a reputation in Memphis as a controversial blogger and radio host. According to MyFoxMemphis.com, he was booted from another AM station in 2010 — he claimed white Republicans pressured the bosses to remove him, according to the report.

Matthews went on to launch his show on WPLX, which was billed as a mostly blues music program.

In Washington, everyday is Groundhog Day

Posted by BA Team On February - 2 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Today is Groundhog Day. This morning, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his hole and saw his shadow – indicating we’re in for another six weeks of winter.

But in Washington, it seems like everyday is Groundhog Day. It seems like everyday we hear about plans to cut spending and restore fiscal responsibility. But every time we end up disappointed. This week, the Congressional Budget Office released its Budget and Economic Outlook that projected the deficit for fiscal 2012 would exceed $1 trillion for the fourth year in a row.

In the latest manifestation of lawmakers’ unwillingness to make the difficult decisions, a group of Senators is exploring ways to put off the automatic cuts triggered by the supercommittee’s failure. This morning, Senators Jon Kyl (AZ), John McCain (AZ), Lindsey Graham (SC), John Cornyn (TX) and Kelly Ayotte (NH) introduced a plan to “delay for a year more than $1 trillion in mandatory cuts – half of which would come from the Pentagon — by trimming the federal workforce and extending a pay freeze for federal employees imposed by the Obama administration.”

The automatic cuts that are currently scheduled to go into effect in January 2013 have raised concerns among some that it would hollow out the Pentagon’s budget and put our national security at risk. While we agree cuts to defense spending must be done carefully, there are few that will argue there is no room for cutbacks in the DoD’s budget.

Furthermore, it’s important to remember why the automatic cuts were put into place – to provide some incentive for the bipartisan supercommittee to produce a credible deficit reduction plan. And the automatic cuts can still be reversed if lawmakers are able to put together a proposal to reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years. Consider that our deficit for the next year alone is projected to reach $1.08 trillion and that requirement doesn’t seem quite so insurmountable.

It’s time for Washington to get serious about fixing our economy. Congress must stop playing politics with the nation’s bottom line and start proposing real solutions that will lead to real growth.

  • Eric Holder testimony at Fast and Furious hearing

    AP

Feb. 2: Attorney General Eric Holder testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing entitled, “Fast & Furious: Management Failures at the Department of Justice.”

DEVELOPING: No one has been punished “yet,” Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday in a contentious hearing on the role of the Justice Department in “Operation Fast and Furious,” about which Holder insisted once more he only heard about in the winter of 2011.

The hearing comes after House committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., asserted that top Justice officials are covering up events surrounding the flawed gun-smuggling probe.

Issa made the accusation in a letter threatening to seek a contempt of Congress ruling against Holder for failing to turn over congressionally subpoenaed documents that were created after problems with Fast and Furious came to light.

In his testimony Thursday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Holder reaffirmed his “commitment to ensuring that these flawed tactics are never used again.”

Holder said that “allowing guns to ‘walk’ — whether in this administration or in the prior one — is wholly unacceptable.”

“The tactic of not interdicting weapons, despite having the ability and legal authority to do so, appears to have been adopted in a misguided effort to stem the alarming number of illegal firearms that are trafficked each year from the United States to Mexico,” he said.

Holder told the committee, “I’m not sure exactly how I found out about the term, ‘Fast and Furious.’ ” He testified repeatedly that he never authorized the controversial tactics employed in the operation.

“There is no attempt at any kind of cover-up,” Holder said under questioning. “We have shared huge amounts of information” and will continue to do so, he said.

But Holder’s statements on the Justice Department’s role in the operation did not sit well with Republican lawmakers on the committee, who accused the attorney general of intentionally withholding key documents in the case.

“The conclusion that I come to is there are some things in there that’s being hidden that you don’t want us to see,” said Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind. “We have every right under the Constitution to check on what you’re doing… So for you to deny this committee anything like that is just dead wrong and I don’t think you’re going to find any way that you can do it.”

Burton went on to say that there are 93,000 documents related to the operation that are being withheld by the Justice Department.

“And you’re saying, well the separation of powers prohibits you from doing that. That’s baloney. That is just baloney,” Burton said.

Issa told Holder the committee will do what is necessary to obtain the information, “If you do not find a legitimate basis to deny us the material we’ve asked for.”

Holder said earlier during testimony that he would release additional materials “to the extent that I can.”

In Fast and Furious, agents lost track of about 1,400 weapons they were tracking after they were sold to low-level straw purchasers believed to be supplying Mexican drug gangs and other criminals. Another 700 firearms connected to suspects in the investigation have been recovered, some from crime scenes in Mexico and the U.S., including a murder scene in Nogales, Ariz., where border agent Brian Terry was killed.

Holder said he learned within 24 hours of Terry’s death.

“When you were informed about that within 24 hours, did anyone inform you or allude to the fact that the weapons found at the scene were from Fast and Furious?” Issa asked Holder.

“No,” Holder replied. “I didn’t know about Operation Fast and Furious until the beginning parts of 2011 after I received that letter from Senator Grassley, I guess at the end of January and then that was about Operation Gun Runner. I actually learned about the Fast and Furious operation in February of that year.”

In Holder’s defense, Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., claimed the committee has “not obtained one shred of evidence that would contradict your testimony.”

“Not one witness, not one document, not one e-mail, and still some continue to suggest that you did personally authorize gunwalking and the tactics in Operation Fast and Furious.”

Wednesday Waste: a permanent earmark ban?

Posted by BA Team On February - 1 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Over the past year or so, there has been a lot of talk about earmarks. The House passed a moratorium on earmarks, but legislation to permanently ban them hasn’t been yet garnered the necessary widespread support.

Opponents slam earmarks as a way to push through pet projects, wasting already scarce taxpayer money. Supporters contend they only represent less than 1% of federal spending and say earmarks are an important way secure funding for essential projects all across the country.

Most recently, Senators Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Pat Toomey (R-PA) introduced a permanent earmark ban as an amendment to an insider-trading bill. The bipartisan amendment quickly received a bipartisan lukewarm reception. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) non-committedly remarked, “I am not sure we need it, but I am open to it.” Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid contended, “I’ve done earmarks all my career, and I’m happy I’ve done earmarks all my career. They’ve helped my state, and they’ve helped different projects around the country.”

Explaining the reasoning behind a permanent ban, Sen. Toomey said, “There is an opportunity for corruption. A process like that is badly flawed and should be remedied.”

The amendment could be voted on this week.

Do you think earmarks should be permanently banned in an effort to reduce wasteful spending? Or should they be maintained as a way to fund necessary projects across the country? Let us know in the comments!

Take-aways from CBO outlook

Posted by BA Team On February - 1 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

As we noted yesterday, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its Budget and Economic Outlook for fiscal years 2012 to 2022. Be sure to check out yesterday’s post for a more nuanced background of the report. Today, we’re giving you some of what we think are the most important take-aways from the report. Check out the highlights – or lowlights – below.

Federal spending increased by four percent in 2011, to $3.6 trillion. Spending is projected to increase by $3 billion in 2012.

Federal revenues increased by $140 billion, or six percent in 2011.

The cost of the stimulus has grown. CBO originally projected it would cost $787 billion. It is now projected to cost $831 billion.

Interest spending is expected to rise significantly – from $224 billion projected in 2012 to $624 billion projected in 2022.

The number of people age 65 or older will increase by about one-third between 2012 and 2022 (from 14 to 17 percent of the population). This will greatly impact Social Security and health care spending.

“Because of the aging of the population and rising costs for health care, the set of budget policies that were in effect in the past cannot be maintained in the future.”

Over the next ten years, spending is expected to rise “because of increasing expenses generated by the aging of the population and rising costs for health care.”

“A significant worsening of the banking and fiscal problems in Europe could lead to further turmoil in international financial markets that could spill over to those in the United States and greatly weaken the economy here.”

The Washington Post’s Ezra Klein attempts to decipher who is responsible for the high deficits and increasing national debt.

The New York Post reports that if current tax laws are allowed to expire, Americans’ tax bills will go up about 30 percent in the next few years.

The Hill says the U.S. House is trying to prevent welfare payments from going to strip clubs.

Roll Call reports the U.S. Senate is again exploring a permanent ban on earmarks. According to Politico, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defended the earmarking process.

BusinessWeek reports that small business’ share of the economy has declined over the past few years. Bloomberg reports a recent downturn in consumer confidence could indicate the overall economy is slowing.

Occupiers Dump Condoms on Catholic School Girls

A group of Occupy Wall Street protesters disrupted a Right to Life rally and threw condoms on Catholic school girls inside the Rhode Island state capitol building.

Barth Bracy, executive director of Rhode Island Right to Life, said their rally had to be cut short after the Occupiers began screaming and refused to allow a Catholic priest to deliver a prayer.

“This is their idea of civil speech but we believe it’s an outrage,” Bracy told Fox News & Commentary “They started heckling, chanting and blowing whistles. They shouted down a priest.”

Last week’s rally was held inside the rotunda of the state capitol in Providence. Bracy said the Occupiers, along with some pro-choice demonstrators, infiltrated the crowd of some 150 pro-lifers. He said the pro-life crowd was made up of senior citizens, mothers with young children, Cub Scouts, and school kids.

Bracy said one of the most egregious incidents occurred when an Occupier climbed to the third floor balcony and dumped a box of condoms on girls from a Catholic school.

“What kind of individual throw condoms at Catholic school girls,” Bracy asked.

Bracy said capitol police were outnumbered and overwhelmed by the protesters. At one point they even attacked State. Rep. Doreen Costa.

“This was one of the most disturbing sights I’ve ever seen,” Costa told Fox News & Commentary. “It was horrendous. “

Costa said a female Occupier hit her on the head with a sign and shoved her “moppy” hair in the lawmaker’s face.

“I told her that she really stunk bad and needed to take a bath,” Costa said.

Costa said she was “speechless” when they showered the young girls with condoms. So was Father Bernard Healey, the executive director of the Rhode Island Catholic Conference.

“It’s disgraceful behavior,” Healey said. “The week before, the pro-abortion people had their rally and no one bothered them. Apparently freedom of speech only applies to those who agree with you.”

Healey called the protesters “mean-spirited” and “ugly.”

He was trying to deliver a blessing to the crowd when the demonstrators shouted him down.

“I led the crowd in singing ‘God Bless America’ to try and down out their awful chants,” he said.

Joseph Little, the chief of the capitol police, told Fox News & Commentary that he did not receive any reports of condoms being dropped on children. He also said to his knowledge, nothing happened to that rose to the level of needing to call in additional support.

Little said no one was arrested.

Gretchen Hamel appears on The Balancing Act

Gretchen explained a little about Public Notice and went on the describe what we strive to do everyday here at Bankrupting America: lay out what the country’s top economic issues mean for you.

Check it out below!

Be sure to check back to see Gretchen’s other appearances on The Balancing Act.

Careful what you tweet.

Two 20-somethings arriving from the U.K. learned a harsh lesson about the American government’s sense of humor on Monday, Jan. 23, when they were detained and then forced to return home due to comments they made on Twitter.

According to the Daily Mail, Leigh Van Bryan, 26, and Emily Bunting, 24, were going through Customs when they were detained.

The two spend the next 12 hours locked up in a cell and being grilled by Homeland Security officials. Bryan was charged with intending to come to the U.S. to commit crimes, while Bunting was charged for traveling with him.

Paperwork for the incident indicates that Bryan’s name was on a “One Day Lookout” list maintained by Homeland Security.

According to the New York Post and World News Daily, this refers to an auto-generated temporary list of inbound travelers that are already in the official terror watch list database.

The paperwork also referred to Bryan’s tweets, incorrectly stating they came from his account on “Tweeter.”

From the official paperwork:

During secondary examination, Mr. Bryan was placed under oath and his sworn statement was taken by CBP Officer Wahmann, Mr. Bryan confirmed that he had posted on his Tweeter [sic] website account that he was coming to the United States to dig up the grave of Marilyn Monroe. Also the tweeter account of Mr. Bryan posted that he was coming to destroy America.

The tweets had been sent a week before their trip, indicating the U.S. government had flagged the pair well before their arrival.

Both claimed the messages were lost in translation.

“They asked why we wanted to destroy America and we tried to explain ['destroy'] meant to get trashed and party,” Bunting told the Daily Mail.

Bryan also said he was asked about a tweet that he says is a quote from the television show ‘Family Guy’ that read, “3 weeks today, we’re totally in LA p***** people off on Hollywood Blvd and diggin’ Marilyn Monroe up!”

“I almost burst out laughing when they asked me if I was going to be Leigh’s lookout while he dug up Marilyn Monroe,” Bunting told the Daily Mail. “It got even more ridiculous because the officials searched our suitcases and said they were looking for spades and shovels.”

But things quickly became less humorous to Bryan and Bunting.

Speaking with the Daily Mail, Bryan said officials told him, “You really f***** up with that tweet, boy,” before handcuffing and putting him in what Bryan described as a “cage” inside of a van. He said he was then transported to a prison with other border offenders.

“It’s just so ridiculous it’s almost funny but at the time it was really scary. The Homeland Security agents were treating me like some kind of terrorist,” Bryan told the Mail.

“We just wanted to have a good time on holiday. That was all Leigh meant in his tweets,” Bunting told The Sun.

This isn’t the first time a tweet has gotten someone in trouble with the U.S. government.

And other social media outlets, such as Facebook, have also been used by police to prevent potential crimes. Just last week, an Arizona policeman drew a Secret Service probe for posting a photo of a man holding a T-shirt with the image of President Obama riddled with bullet holes.

This news comes at a time when Internet privacy and censorship are hot issues. Just last week, controversy erupted when Twitter revealed it would comply with censorship laws in countries like China and Thailand where much of the content on the internet is restricted.

Take a look at the tweets that got the couple in hot water (below):

CBO projects growing deficits

Posted by BA Team On January - 31 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Today, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released their forecast for projections in federal spending, tax revenues, and deficits. The CBO is required to produce a forecast of the U.S.’ finances based upon current law.  However, it is important to keep a few things in mind when examining these numbers. The problem with releasing these projections under current law is that many “temporary” provisions passed by Congress aren’t really temporary – they are regularly extended by Congress on a “temporary” basis.

Because of this, the CBO creates an alternative baseline, which assumes many temporary provisions are permanent.  This year’s alternative baseline assumes, among other things, that “temporary” provisions such as the 2001 tax cut are extended, the automatic spending cuts in the Budget Control Act never take effect, and payments to doctors under Medicare remain constant.  In general, the numbers of the alternative baseline are much more important than the actual baseline because the alternative baseline is more likely to reflect policies that Congress actually passes into law.

But regardless of how you look at the numbers – the baseline or the alternative baseline – they aren’t good.  Under the CBO baseline, the deficit grows by $3.1 trillion over the next ten years.  Under the alternative baseline, the deficit grows by a staggering $10.98 trillion.  Considering the current national debt is over $15 trillion, both baselines represent a dangerous growth in the national debt – with the country running unsustainable deficits for the foreseeable future.

On a positive note, it’s reassuring to see the CBO warn Congress about the effects of digging deeper into an economic hole, something we’ve been doing for years at Bankrupting America.  In the report, the CBO says:  ”A rising amount of federal debt would increasingly restrict policymakers’ ability to use tax and spending policies to respond to unexpected challenges, such as economic downturns or financial crises. Burgeoning debt also would boost the likelihood of a sudden fiscal crisis, during which investors would lose confidence in the government’s ability to manage its budget and the government would lose its ability to borrow at affordable rates.”

Washington must take note.  While the numbers may be hard to put into perspective, the consequences are all too real. We only have to look to Greece to see what happens when investors lose confidence in a government’s ability to manage its budget – and subsequently lose its ability to borrow at affordable rates.

The time to act is now. Americans need real solutions that lead to real economic growth.

CBO: BUDGET DEFICIT TO RISE MORE THAN ONE TRILLION FY12 & INCREASE TRILLIONS MORE IN YEARS TO COME

More Liabilities, Higher Unemployment Projection Demands Immediate Action

Arlington, VA – This morning, the Congressional Budget Office [CBO] released its annual report, which unfortunately, yet predictably, states that the budget deficit will increase to $1.08 trillion in 2012, and the jobless rate will increase to 8.9 percent by the end of 2012 and 9.2 percent in 2013.  The report also shows that the deficit will grow by trillions more in the years to come and the rising amount of debt will constrain the ability of elected officials to respond to national challenges and crises as they arise.

Gretchen Hamel, Executive Director of Public Notice, said the following:

“Today’s report makes clear what the American people have been telling Washington for years: the current rate of spending is irresponsible and unsustainable.  We cannot continue to add trillions to the federal deficit and expect to grow jobs and have enough money left over to meet the needs of the country.

“The fact that the report shows we will be less able to protect our nation or respond to a national crises in the future due to the reckless and careless actions of politicians today should be deeply disturbing to everyone.  The lunacy must stop now.  Real reforms are required if there is any hope we can move toward a path of fiscal sanity and sustainability.”

Attorney General Eric Holder’s Department of Justice dumped documents related to Operation Fast and Furious on congressional officials late Friday night. Central to this document dump is a series of emails showing Holder was informed of slain Border Patrol agent Brian Terry’s murder on the day it happened – December 15, 2010.

An email from one official, whose name has been redacted from the document, to now-former Arizona U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke reads: “On December 14, 2010, a BORTAC agent working in the Nogales, AZ AOR was shot. The agent was conducting Border Patrol operations 18 miles north of the international boundary when he encountered [redacted word] unidentified subjects. Shots were exchanged resulting in the agent being shot. At this time, the agent is being transported to an area where he can be air lifted to an emergency medical center.”

That email was sent at 2:31 a.m. on the day Terry was shot. One hour later, a follow-up email read: “Our agent has passed away.”

Burke forwarded those two emails to Holder’s then-deputy chief of staff Monty Wilkinson later that morning, adding that the incident was “not good” because it happened “18 miles w/in” the border.

Wilkinson responded to Burke shortly thereafter and said the incident was “tragic.” “I’ve alerted the AG [Holder], the Acting DAG, Lisa, etc.”

Then, later that day, Burke followed up with Wilkinson after Burke discovered from officials whose names are redacted that the guns used to kill Terry were from Fast and Furious. “The guns found in the desert near the murder BP officer connect back to the investigation we were going to talk about – they were AK-47s purchased at a Phoenix gun store,” Burke wrote to Wilkinson.

“I’ll call tomorrow,” Wilkinson responded.

Holder has faced difficult questions surrounding the question of when he was first informed of the gunwalking program. He testified in Congress that he had only learned of Fast and Furious a “few weeks” before a May 3, 2011, House Judiciary Committee appearance.

Holder has since walked back that “few weeks” comment, amending it to more of a “couple months.”

“I did say a ‘few weeks,’” Holder said during a November 8 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, responding to a question from its chairman Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy. “I probably could’ve said ‘a couple of months.’ I didn’t think the term I said, ‘few weeks,’ was inaccurate based on what happened.”

There have also been a series of documents containing the intimate details of Fast and Furious that were sent to Holder throughout 2010 from several of his senior aides. Holder claims he did not read his memos.

Holder will be appearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform next Thursday, Feb. 2. Though Holder has already testified before Congress three times about matters relating to Fast and Furious — twice before the House Judiciary Committee and once before the Senate Judiciary Committee — this is the first time the House oversight committee will have an opportunity to question Holder himself.

“The Judiciary Committee has multiple issues with the Attorney General,” House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa said in an exclusive interview with The Daily Caller last week. “We have one issue: the issue of breaking the law in order to enforce the law.”

“The oversight committee is investigating the Department of Justice, which is very different than his appearances before the Judiciary Committees in which they’re asking how things are going at Justice. What we’ve discovered in our investigations is a pattern of cover-up [and] delay. Ultimately Congress was given false information and now we’ve had people both resign and take the Fifth as we try to get to the basic elements of why and how was Congress lied to.”

A total of 103 members of the House have called for Holder’s resignation or firing, expressed “no confidence” in Holder via a formal House Resolution, or both. Two sitting governors, two U.S. senators and all the major Republican presidential candidates join those 103 congressmen in not trusting Holder. Many of those who have called for Holder’s resignation have pointed out that Holder claiming that he didn’t read his memos is a sign that he’s admitting incompetence to avoid charges of corruption.

This article was updated after publication. A previous version reported Holder was informed that the weapons used to kill Terry were linked to Operation Fast & Furious. But a letter to Congress provided by the DOJ suggests only that Monty Wilkinson was made aware. That letter states Wilkinson does not recall telling Holder. Reached Sunday, a spokesperson for Holder relied only on that letter, and declined to confirm that Holder himself was not informed.

Capitol Hill was relatively quiet again last week with the exception of President Obama’s State of the Union address. Members of the House and Senate gathered Tuesday to hear the remarks. You can find our take on it here.

On Thursday, according to The New York Times, the Senate voted to let President Obama’s requested $1.2 trillion increase in the debt limit to go forward. Under the debt limit compromise worked out last summer, this is the third and final increase that will take effect upon the President’s request unless the Congress expressly disapproves.

According to The Hill, the House voted to instruct the chamber’s conferees to work to find a compromise for extending the 2011 payroll tax cut by the end of February. A Congressional Budget Office summary of the bill to extend the cut for another year can be found here.

Check below for more of last week’s House and Senate action.

Average weekly budget for all House offices: ($1,446,009/52) x 435 = $2,096,421

Average weekly budget for all Senate offices: ($3,409,093/52) x 100 = $6,555,958

Non-salary money allocated for Congress: $4.656 billion/52 = $89,538,462
