When I lived in a rural town with a nearby naval air station during World War II, stores were plastered with signs declaring, "Loose lips sink ships." As schoolboys, we knew next to nothing about the war and couldn't imagine that our playground chatter in Fallon, Nev., would provide information to the enemy. But we took the signs seriously.
